Michigan’s True Gain Antennas Outfits Field Engineers

WASHINGTON, DC – One of the primary tasks in the national effort to increase vital broadband access is to confirm exactly where broadband is – and is not – available.

Connected Nation, the national nonprofit leading the way in promoting broadband access, adoption, and use, has been aided in its broadband validation efforts by a recent donation from True Gain Antennas (TGA) of 900 MHz antennas to perform field validations of frequency, range, and power of broadband providers from Alaska to Texas, as well as Puerto Rico.

“The True Gain antennas have been just what we needed – reliable, high performance, really rugged antennas, and they are even made in Michigan,” said Connected Nation Senior Technologist Terry Holmes.

True Gain donated antennas for each of Connected Nation’s field engineers, who are working across the country to validate broadband availability. Connected Nation collects broadband availability data from various sources, but it’s the engineers who verify the data by conducting on-the-ground testing.

“The True Gain antennas allow us to make accurate readings in all types of terrain. Our work is part of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s State Broadband Initiative program, so our data and assessments have to be right every time. True Gain’s antennas have given us a lot of confidence in our field validation data and the engineers and technicians really like them,” Holmes said.

Gathering the data has helped Connected Nation help communities, like Clare County, Michigan, get online. Holmes has been assisting Clare County leaders by developing propagation maps that locate and optimize new fixed wireless transmission towers. Three communications towers have been constructed and a fourth is currently being erected that will serve the entire eastern side of Clare County. For more on the Clare County efforts, see here.
