Getting Started

Tools and Map Navigation

The Tools and Map Navigation menus contain a variety of options for you to display broadband coverage, navigate around the map, and change the visualized service. The Tools and Map Navigation contains all of the features needed to interact with the map display. For detailed interactive map help documentation, click here.

Mapping Tools

The Mapping Tools contain a set of tools used to display broadband coverage based on three modes of operation: Basic, Advanced, or Analysis. The Basic mode of operation allows you to view the different broadband coverage maps. The Advanced mode of operation provides additional functionality and control over layer visibility. The Analysis mode of operation allows authorized users to view model priority coverage areas.

Zoom In

The Zoom In tool magnifies a location on the map display and view a smaller, detailed area of interest at a large scale. There are multiple methods to zoom in on the map which include, using the Zoom In tool, using the mouse wheel, or using keyboard tricks.

Zoom Out

The Zoom Out tool reduces the magnification on the map display for you to view a larger area at a small scale, or with low level of detail.

Pan

The Pan tool shifts the map image relative to the display window without changing the viewing scale.

Zoom to State

The Zoom to State option displays the initial state extent as defined by the application. In this case, the display will zoom to the state boundary. The Zoom to State feature acts as a bookmark and allows you to return to a defined view.

Road Layer

The Road layer includes a seamless, multi-scale street map with highway-level data for the world and major-road-level data for the United States. The map is intended for display at small-to-medium scales (i.e., down to ~1:150,000 scale).

Satellite

Satellite imagery includes a seamless mosaic of 1-meter resolution or better aerial imagery for the contiguous United States along with satellite imagery for the world at 500-meter and 15-meter resolutions for display at smaller scales. This color mosaic of commercial and government imagery sources includes recent submeter commercial imagery for many metropolitan areas and the best available government imagery for other areas. The imagery includes with a publishable metadata layer that describes the source, resolution, and currency of individual image footprints.

Locate on the Map

The Locate on the Map tool is an address finder that geocodes an address location and returns matching in order of score ranking. Based on the ranked scores, the map display navigates to the highest ranked result. A binocular icon is added to the map display to indicate the geocoded address or location.

To locate an address, follow the steps outlined below.

  • From the tool bar, click Mapping Tools.

  • Click the Find Address option. The Find Address widget opens to the Address Locator by default.

  • Enter a U.S. street address.

  • Click Search. The match displays in the results pane of the Find Address widget. A highlighted pushpin is added to the map.
  • Hover your mouse cursor over the returned results. The pushpin associated with the selected result will flash to indicate the location of the result on the map.

Demographics by Area

The Demographic By Area tool provides basic demographic information for a selected area. Currently, the Demographics by Area tool is based upon a U.S. Census 2000 Block Group query.

When using the Demographic By Area tool, the selected area may intersect multiple block groups. In the total population count, the Demographic By Area tool includes the entire head count for each block group that intersects the selected area. As a result, the population count may seem inaccurate.

  • From the tool bar, click Mapping Tools.

  • Click the Demographics by Area tool.  The Search diablog box will be opened.

  • Select the point, line, polygon, or freehand polygon bounding box tool.
  • Draw a point, line, or area on the map with the selected tool. The queried feature is drawn on the map display. The search result displays demographic information including number of households per location, household density, and census block.
  • Roll over a result in the Search dialog. A popup window appears on the map display and lists the demographics result for the selected census block.
  •  Return to the graphic search tab and select the garbage can icon to clear the tool results.

The Print option allows you to produce a hardcopy map from BroadbandStat.
