Intelliwave Announces First Gigabit Fiber-To-The-Home in Central Ohio

Intelliwave Broadband has announced the construction of a new Gigabit Fiber Optic broadband network in two rural areas  south of Columbus. According to the company’s press release, gigabit fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is available to homes and businesses in Amanda and Commercial Point, Ohio. The network is expected to extend to more than 1,000 doorsteps by the end of 2016 and thousands more in 2017.

Census Shows Home Broadband Adoption Improving in the U.S., Despite Persistent Gaps

The United States Census Bureau recently released data from its 2015 American Community Survey (ACS) showing that home Internet access and broadband adoption are climbing in the United States, albeit slowly. Overall, the ACS data shows that 77% of Americans have some sort of broadband service at home. That includes 6% of Americans who subscribe only to mobile service at home.

FCC Releases Broadband and Health Interactive Mapping Tool

The Federal Communications Commission’s Connect2Health Task Force has launched a broadband and health interactive map. The new tool, titled Mapping Broadband Health in America, allows users to analyze broadband and health data visually, and at a national, state, and county level. The map is intended for use by both public and private sectors, and local communities, as a tool to drive discussion, to identify opportunities and gaps in connectivity and health care, and to assist broadband health policies and digital health solutions.

FCC CAF Offer to Ohio Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers

In a public notice from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the final version of the Alternative Connect America Cost Model (A-CAM) was released. The FCC has offered 19 small, rural Ohio local telephone companies, including Horizon and TDS, $55 million in subsidies over 10 years to upgrade their broadband networks. This next phase of the Connect America Fund targets over 7,000 home and business locations in areas served by these rural companies that do not have 10 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload broadband service available today.

FirstNet’s Band Class 14 Tested in Emergency Scenarios

Public safety professionals in Beavercreek Township, Ohio, recently conducted simulated emergency drills to test FirstNet’s new Band Class 14 network. The testing was part of a week-long training exercise and made possible by collaboration between Greene County and state of Ohio officials.
