Small Business Technology Taskforce Program Underway in Rural Michigan

By Wil Payton

The Michigan Rural Council (MRC), in partnership with Connect Michigan and the Microenterprise Network, is now working on a pilot project to encourage broadband access, adoption and use by small rural Michigan businesses.

A Bright Side episode on this endeavor is being produced by the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) to highlight this project.

Bright Side episodes are videos produced to “tell the stories of Small Businesswomanpeople, organizations and communities that will inspire, empower and educate their viewership” according to the CEDAM website.

Below is an excerpt from The Voice News on this development:

The Internet service in rural areas is poor, so business owners learn to rely on outdated methods that are less reliable. Broadband network executives opt out of setting up expensive Internet devices in rural areas because of low user counts.

The Community Economic Development Association of Michigan, in partnership with Connect Michigan, has a pilot program ready to be rolled out to, hopefully, put a stop to this old, circular outcome. A Small Business Technology Taskforce Program will assist in growing rural micro-businesses into successful enterprises with up-to-date business practices.

A Broadband Taskforce Development kit is also being developed by the MRC and selected communities will be able to participate in a day of taskforce training.
