Rural Michigan Communities Face Challenges Acquiring High-Speed Internet Access

By Wil Payton

Many Wexford, Lake County and other rural communities are less likely to have high-speed Internet access.

A recent Cadillac News article highlighted the contrasting broadband download speeds throughout the state. Below is an excerpt from that article:

While 75 percent of Wexford County households have access to broadband download speeds of 3 megabits per second, that's well below the state average of almost 98 percent.

That stands in contrast to Osceola County, for example, where almost 100 percent of households had access to 3-mbps service, although Wexford County did far better in efforts to promote digital literacy. An assessment by Connect Michigan in Missaukee County showed 89 percent of county residents had access to broadband speeds of 3 mbps or more.
