Paid Internship: More Available for Michigan College Students

By Wil Payton

Michigan students are finding it easier to secure paid internships as employers react to an improving economy.

Internships provide the opportunity to gain practical skills, career field knowledge and important contacts. But many students seek these positions to augment ever-increasing college expenses.

Another benefit of paid internships is that they often provide a better learning experience. The reason for the advantage over unpaid positions is that there is a direct value component in a student’s time, which incentivizes employers to utilize the student more productively.

Below is an excerpt from a Crain’s Detroit Business article on this development:

"There's definitely been an uptick" in openings for internships as a whole, and more employers, including nonprofits, are willing to pay for them, said Amanda Dumond-Avila, director of talent initiatives and business enhancement at the East Lansing-based Prima Civitas Foundation. The foundation includes among its programs a Michigan Internship Initiative to help businesses and nonprofits recruit interns and build structures to use them effectively.
