An Example of How FirstNet Will Improve Communications Among Law Enforcement Teams

By Connected Nation

There are multiple first response agencies that cover large territories and need to communicate in emergencies more effectively. FirstNet’s efforts to provide a uniform broadband network will do just that. Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department Chief Scott Edson talked about how crucial an LTE broadband network is for all 40 police departments just within his area. With the need to respond in 88 cities, there is no room for slow data and dropped signals.

“If all the users want to send large amounts of data, FirstNet brings us the pipeline that we need for that kind of solution,” said Edson.

Many types of technology, such as body cameras and portable radios on police officers, can be replaced by smartphones due to FirstNet’s capabilities.

“The next generation needs a smartphone and a police officer and he/she becomes the hub for technology connected to an LTE network,” he said.

The reliability of FirstNet is expected to provide Los Angeles County with better communication between agencies and first response teams, because all agencies will be able to send and report data at once. Resources are diverted to first responders on the scene.

“We can adjust our resources in the county or in the region to ensure that we put the resources where they’re needed based on the current disaster,” said Edson.

Ultimately, FirstNet provides quick data exchange; when that happens and police and sheriffs can respond and analyze an emergency quickly, more lives can be saved.
