Gull Lake Area Community Moving Forward With the Connect Community Program

Gull Lake is a popular and scenic body of water in southwestern Michigan, often cited as one of the state’s “largest water playgrounds.” Surrounded by six townships spanning three counties, the Gull Lake Area is also home to several championship level golf courses, quiet residential communities, and more rural areas. Yet with all the regional amenities, several sections of the area remain unreachable by broadband, to the detriment of local residents and vacationers alike. What do first responders need for communications in areas with poor coverage, or where a tower has been damaged during an emergency situation or a natural disaster? The Michigan Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) has a solution. It’s called the Site on Wheels, or SOW. Purchased in 2009 through grant funding, the site consists of two trailers. The main trailer has a majority of the end user equipment including a six channel trunked MPSCS site. NTIA Announces Federal Funding Opportunity for the State and Local Implementation Grant Program

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced yesterday the much awaited Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO ) for the State and Local Implementation Grant Program (SLIGP).  With this, NTIA commences the key state-level planning process that will support the construction of a national public safety mobile broadband network (PSBN).
